Locked Out of Your Car? Here's What to Do

A car lockout can throw off your whole day, especially in the Phoenix heat. The good news is that most lockouts are straightforward for a mobile locksmith. Take a breath, get somewhere safe and work through these steps.

Check the simple things first

  1. Check every door and the trunk. One may still be unlocked.
  2. If you have a spare key, see whether someone can bring it to you.
  3. Do not force the window or wedge the door yourself. That can damage the glass, weather stripping, wiring or lock.
  4. If a child, pet or anyone in distress is locked inside, call 911 right away.

Call a mobile locksmith

A mobile locksmith comes to the vehicle, so you do not need to arrange a tow. When you call, have your exact location and the vehicle's year, make and model ready. It also helps to say whether the key is locked inside, lost or broken. Clear details help the locksmith bring the right tools and give you a better estimate before heading out.

How long does it take, and what does it cost?

Arrival time depends on your location, traffic and the locksmith's schedule. Once at the vehicle, many mobile jobs take about 30 minutes, although the lock and situation can change that. Hen Locksmith Services starts car lockout service at $60 within 5 miles. Depending on distance, the total may be $80–$100. You will get the price before the work starts.

Lost Your Only Car Key? You Don't Need the Dealer

Losing the only key to your car feels like a dealer-only problem. It usually is not. An automotive locksmith can often make a replacement from scratch even when there is no working key to copy.

How a new key is made without the original

The locksmith first confirms the vehicle details and the type of key it uses. The new key can then be cut to match the vehicle and, when the car uses a transponder or smart key, programmed so the car recognizes it. Hen Locksmith Services cuts and programs the key on the spot at the vehicle.

This is different from ordering a key blank online. A blank still needs the correct cut, and most modern vehicles also need programming before the engine will start.

Mobile service saves a tow

An all-keys-lost replacement is a mobile job. Tell us where the vehicle is located, along with the year, make and model. We bring the equipment to you, which usually means you do not have to tow the car to a dealership. Many jobs can be completed the same day, depending on key availability and the schedule.

Often faster and less expensive than the dealer

Dealer service can involve ordering a key, scheduling an appointment and getting the vehicle to the dealership. A mobile locksmith handles the cutting and programming where the car sits and is often the faster, less expensive option. The exact price depends on the vehicle, the key type and your location.

Why You Should Get a Spare Key Before You Need One

A spare car key is easy to put off because the key you have works fine today. But making a spare while you still have a working key is simpler, less expensive and much less stressful than replacing the only key after it disappears.

A spare costs less than an emergency replacement

When you have a working key, it gives the locksmith a head start. There is no all-keys-lost situation to solve and no need to travel to a stranded vehicle. That keeps the job simpler and helps you avoid a mobile trip fee. If the only key is lost, the replacement has to be cut and programmed from scratch at the vehicle.

It can take about 15 minutes

At our Phoenix location, many straightforward spare-key jobs take about 15 minutes. Bring the vehicle and the working key. We will confirm the correct key type, cut the spare and program it when the vehicle requires programming. Some newer or special vehicles may take longer, so it is best to send the year, make and model first.

One small key can prevent a big disruption

Keep the spare somewhere secure, not inside the car. If your main key is lost, damaged or has a dead fob battery at the wrong time, the spare can save you from waiting for emergency service, paying for a mobile visit and rearranging your day.

To price a spare key, call Hen Locksmith Services at 480-593-6480, or text the year, make and model.

How Much Does a Replacement Car Key Cost in Phoenix?

There is no single price for every replacement car key. A basic transponder key for an older vehicle and a push-start smart fob for a newer vehicle are different parts and require different work. Here is a plain-English way to understand the quote.

Typical price ranges

For the American and Asian vehicles we service, many standard spare or remote-head keys fall around $80–$150. Many push-start fobs are around $140–$220. Newer vehicles and keys that need special equipment can reach about $260–$300. These are general ranges, not a quote for every model.

What changes the price?

  • Push start or regular key: Smart fobs usually cost more than standard transponder keys.
  • Spare or all keys lost: A spare is easier to make because you still have a working key. An all-keys-lost job must be handled at the vehicle and may include additional cutting and mobile work.
  • Dealer or locksmith: A dealer may require an appointment and a tow. A mobile locksmith can cut and program at your location and is often less expensive.
  • Vehicle year and system: Newer vehicles and certain security systems need different keys, software and programming steps.

Why programming matters

The metal cut or fob buttons are only part of the job. Most modern keys contain a chip, and the vehicle has to be programmed to recognize it. A low price for a key blank does not help if the key cannot start the car. When programming is listed in a Hen Locksmith Services price, it is included in that price.

For an exact quote anywhere in Phoenix or the Valley, call or text 480-593-6480 with the year, make, model, whether it is push start and whether you have a working key.

What Is Key Programming and Why Does Your Car Need It?

Modern car keys do more than turn a lock. Most contain a small electronic chip, sometimes called a transponder. When you try to start the car, the key and the vehicle's security system communicate. If the car does not recognize that chip, the engine will not start.

Cutting and programming are different

Cutting shapes the metal blade so it fits the ignition or door. Programming registers the key's chip with the vehicle. Push-start fobs also need to be paired with the car. A key can have the correct physical cut and still fail to start the engine if it has not been programmed.

Why a hardware-store copy may not work

A hardware store may be able to copy the metal blade on some keys. That copy might unlock the door, but it may not start a vehicle that expects a programmed chip. The car's anti-theft system is doing its job: it blocks keys it does not recognize.

What happens during programming?

The locksmith uses automotive programming equipment to connect the new key or fob to the vehicle's security system. The exact process depends on the year, make, model and key type. The key is then tested to make sure it starts the vehicle and that the available remote functions work.

Programming is why a complete replacement-key price is different from the price of an uncut blank online. Hen Locksmith Services includes programming in its programmed-key prices, so you leave with a working key, not just a piece of hardware.
